I have a Compaq Presario s5200nx, with 512kb ram, 2.7 ghz Celeron processor, and now a 120 gb Western Digital hard drive. I took the original hard drive (120gb Samsung), which had windows xp installed and running fine, out and put it into a newer computer I built. I installed the 120 gb WD drive in (which also had a running version of XP installed on it) and it wouldn't boot.

How

I then tried putting my windows xp cd in to reformat and reinstall, but everytime, it loads up, and then just says at the bottom 'Starting Windows' and freezes at this. I then tried using the recovery cds that were made from this computer and put the first one it, It just gets to a screen that says 'Compaq Recovery' and freezes at this. Next I took some 'Quick Restore' cds I had from an older laptop and put those in. Everything seemed to be working fine until I got to the end where an error saying 'Memory Error' came up, and the PC still wouldnt boot. I have tested the hard drive on other computers, works fine, as well as ran Western Digital's Diagnostics on it, which showed no errors. I have no idea why it cant reinstall windows, when it ran windows fine using the other drive.

Removed from Compaq 120gig Samsung HDD and installed in Custom built system = no boot. Meaning that it boots to Windows and re-starts, if so expected. XP does not like being moved from system to system. Or no post screen?

Then something is not connected correctly. 120gig WD w/OS installed in Compaq = no boot.

Rambling now. Compaq/HP recovery disk are HWD specific to Compaq/HP Model. Seen some Compaq/HP systems take 20 mins + to finish install at Windows splash screen. WD single drive no jumpers. Use utility to write 0s to the drive. Don't ask, don't know why, but I've had a few install issues cured using this issue.

How

I would like to thank you all for responding and helping me out, I have now got the hard drive working. After reading various Microsoft help articles, I found that by pressing F5 during the 'Examining hardware and configuration' part of the XP Install, you can select a different 'HAL' or computer setup, which then allowed the setup process to work and I was able to preform a clean install of windows onto the computer. Thanks again.

But Bill you are right in that Windows does not like to be moved from system to system, i figured this out making the new computer.
